I’m really excited to have a new single out. It’s called “Counting the Days”, and it’s about the loneliness it’s so easy to experience, especially at Christmas time.
Listen now:
I’ll be donating all profits from sales of the track to a charity called Marmalade Trust. They support people experiencing loneliness, especially around Christmas but at all times of year, too.
The song is based on personal experience, to an extent. I’ve been quite insular of late, not really feeling up to going out or joining in. But stay in enough and I can imagine it’s easy to lose all those connections you build up over a lifetime. You get to a point where they’re not very strong any more.
Here are the lyrics:
Around me in my wake
I’ve left a trail of old connections, like the crumbs of a Christmas cake
Put out for the birdsThe remnants of a life
Summed up along a string of sentiment
The cards on the mantlepiece are far between, nowThe nights are silent; I’m home on my own
It’s the way I like it
Why am I so alone?I’m counting the days
Until the advent of a better dawn’ the day will come when I’m reborn
And I really live againI’m hoping to be saved
A shining light arrives before my eyes, and everything will be OK
And it won’t hurt, any moreLife is like the ringing of the churchbells
A clamour, and a toll
And pulling in together is what saves us
A harmony we just can’t reach on our ownRinging the bells, joining us all in parallel and I can see
A trail of little lights to brighten the way
A trail of tiny crumbs of Christmas cake
For the birds to takeI’m taking it slow
Venturing out into the snow, and leaving footprints on the world outside
A sign that I’m here againOpening doors
A new one every day, a candle in the dark lighting up the way
Picking out their footprints, tooThe nights are silent; I’m home on my own
But the plans I’m making are little crumbs of hope
Have a listen and do please consider buying it, as all proceeds go to a brilliant cause.
