New song Midsummer is out now

Who loves the sun?

For me, the closed curtains and heightened brightness can easily get me down at this time of year. The blazing sunshine barges in uninvited, disrupting my easy equilibrium.

It’s doesn’t seem all that normal to dislike hot days. “Heretic misery”, I call it, in my new song, Midsummer. Perhaps it’s a peculiar sensory sensitivity, or just a bookish preference for quotidian dullness and drizzle. Whatever the reason, if you find that summer feels oppressive or depressing, then this song is for you. I’ve enjoyed wallowing in the melodrama, indulging in some over-the-top, sultry melancholia.

Here are the lyrics:

Midsummer

A summer sunrise, and my spirits are low
The outlook is poor and my blinds have no further down to go
Mercury soaring, and the heat is on
But I can’t find the glow in my heart and it’s bringing me down

The skyline lightens, and I lie awake
Behind my curtains a starlit daybreak
Silence reigns, and I wish it could be my ruling monarch
Bring the rains and still my heart, and cushion me safe

Because I’m midsummer, a nightmare of colour, I can’t stand the heat of the day
The temperature rising is too much to bear
And the blistering fever is high

Heretic misery, heretic pain
You don’t understand why I’m despondent again
I’m only happy when the summer storms are raging
Flooding the dry spell of my thundering heart

Because I’m midsummer, a nightmare of colour, I can’t stand the heat of the day
The temperature rising is too much to bear
And the blistering fever is high
